About Us

The dream of the Wayfarer’s Rest began in the winter of 1997-98 while owners Andrea and Paul Knapik were travelling around the north island of New Zealand. Affordable, home-style accommodations were available in every small town and allowed them to explore the country and offered wonderful opportunities to meet with fellow travelers and hear about their adventures.

Back on San Juan Island this unique form of travel accommodation did not exist.

Recognizing this gap in service for budget minded bikers, kayakers, whale watchers, bird watchers, book readers or picnickers looking for a sunny cliff overlooking the beautiful Puget Sound etc… the two were inspired to create a place where the accommodations were a means to explore the island and rest your head on a comfortable pillow at a reasonable rate.
